Roydon-based dog grooming business built on one-to-one care and a love of animals

Built on her love of animals, Gail Webster’s holistic grooming business stands apart for the care and attention given to the individual needs of each dog.

Grooming dogs and ensuring that they are comfortable and happy in her home-based grooming salon has always been a priority for the 42-year-old, since launching her business from her Roydon home 18 months ago.

“I’ve always loved animals,” said Gail. “I remember having a pet chicken named Henrietta when I was 12 and spending time with her.

“Taking care of dogs, especially ones who have experienced trauma and might be frightened of the grooming process, is at the centre of what I do – and getting to know each dog and client is the most important first step.

“I do everything myself, so I build personal relationships and my clients always know they can call me about anything.

“Everything is one-to-one with the dogs, and we start off with a meet and greet so I can assess what might make them scared or nervous.

“I then use positive reinforcement to train them and build their confidence – giving them routines they can learn and placing the focus on them feeling safe and happy with what is going on. They are free to jump up or down from the table when they want.

Mrs Webster began her training in college before starting to volunteer at dog grooming salons, where she eventually found a business based around holistic principles.

She has converted a conservatory space in her home to use as a salon, and has added a plastic bath and a low table for dogs to jump up or down.

“I immediately knew this approach was right for me, and I’ve always built my business around learning a dog’s personality and building trust, without restraints and without rushing, while offering really good grooming technique,” she added.

“I’m now training to be able to teach holistic dog grooming to others. Everything I do is based on my love of dogs.”
