Bressingham Chequers Inn asset status appeal taken to Tribunal
The future of a closed pub in Bressingham has taken yet another turn after its owners lodged an appeal against its listing as a ‘community asset’.
South Norfolk Council’s decision to place The Chequers Inn, off the A1066 Low Road, on their Asset of Community Value (ACV) register is set to reviewed by tribunal, following the dismissal of an appeal to the council by owners Michael and Hazel Knox-Johston to have it removed from the register earlier this year.
The Chequers Inn, which shut down in 2012, was previously the subject of a change-of-use planning application to convert it into a boutique bed-and-breakfast, which was rejected near the end of last year.
The district council has since written to the Knox-Johnstons asking them to clarify the residential use of the property and what their future intentions are for it.
The Friends of Bressingham Chequers Community Asset Group, a team of concerned local residents that fought against the conversion plans and lobbied for the building to be denoted as a Community Asset, says it has been invited to make representations at the First Tier Tribunal court, which does not currently have a date set at the time of going to press.
Paul Davey, chairman of the campaign group, said: “I have been encouraged to detail the families, organisations and local businesses that met and used The Chequers on a regular basis.”
Mr Davey also stated the group had requested South Norfolk Council issue The Chequers Inn with an Article 4 directive, which would prohibit any Permitted Development at the property unless planning permission had been granted.
However, the South Norfolk Council turned down this request, claiming the directive would not be “a proportionate action in the present circumstances”, on the grounds it “does not deliver a pub back to the community, nor does it prevent the building being turned back into a pub in the future.”
