More news, no ads

Prime minister Boris Johnson has confirmed today, via a video on social media, that he has tested positive for coronavirus.

In the two minute piece, Mr Johnson explained the situation.

He said: "I want to bring you up to speed with something that is happening today, which is that I developed mild symptoms of the coronavirus,

"That is to say, a temperature and a persistent cough, and on the advice of the chief medical officer I have taken a test and that has come out positive, so I am working from home, I am self isolating and that is entirely the right thing to do."

But he said he would carry on his work, through the 'wizardry of technology', to communicate with his top team in what he called 'the fightback against the coronavirus'.

He continued: "I want to thank everybody who is involved and, thank above all else, our amazing NHS staff, it was very moving last night to join in that national Clap for the NHS,

"But it is not just our NHS, it is out police, our social care workers, teachers, everybody who works in schools, the DWP staff, it is an amazing national effort by the public services but also by every member of the British public who is volunteering, it is an incredible response."

Mr Johnson said around 600,000 people had now offered their help to the NHS and that that the nation would get through it by following the measures put in place by the government.
