Big job losses on horizon for south Norfolk, warns council leader

Leaders at Norfolk County Council expect to see tens of thousands of people made redundant between now and the turn of the year, with south Norfolk being particularly hard hit.

At a meeting of the council’s cabinet last Monday, council leader Andrew Proctor said that as the furlough scheme draws to a close at the end of the month and lockdown restrictions continue to tighten, an additional 41,000 people in the county could find themselves out of work by Christmas.

The council’s modelling – based on the central of three Office of Budget Responsibility forecasts – suggests that south Norfolk, along with Norwich, King’s Lynn and west Norfolk, are likely to be hit hardest.

He added that job sectors most likely to be affected were wholesale retail and the motor trade, human health and social activities, education, manufacturing, accommodation and food services, and administrative and support activities.

Cllr Proctor said: “This could be worse for young people and we already know that, over the past months, nationally, 60 per cent of employers stopped recruiting apprentices altogether. Many existing apprentices have been unable to complete their training programmes.

“Financial insecurity leads to many issues, such as poor physical and mental health in people, as well as an increase in inter-family problems, such as domestic violence and drugs and alcohol abuse.”

The situation in neighbouring Suffolk paints a similar picture. Suffolk County Council’s scrutiny committee heard on Thursday that latest estimates were predicting 20,000 fresh redundancies in the county, while a survey found one in four local businesses expected to reduce their workforce to stay afloat.
