Diss firm TW Gaze marked the official opening of a new auction room, with a star lot fetching almost £11,000.

The first sale in the Waveney Room – a bespoke new building at Diss Auction Rooms – was well attended.

As well as buyers in the room, there was live online bidding and a number of written bids for a total of 680 lots in a specialist modern design sale.

Interested centred on a 15cm silvered stoneware bowl by German-born potter Hans Coper, who is viewed by many experts as Britain’s most important post-war ceramic artist.

The bowl was eventually sold to an online buyer who beat off stiff competition to acquire the piece, which has a re-glued chip on the rim, for £10,800.

Other lots in the sale included designer glass, ceramics, furniture, textiles, art and sculpture.

Modern design specialist James Bassam said: “I was very happy with the whole sale but the price achieved for the Hans Coper bowl was an amazing way to mark the opening of the Waveney Room.”

The Waveney Room is the first phase of TW Gaze’s current building project. Over the summer and autumn, the completion of a new reception and offices will be followed by the fitting out of a new cafe.

TW Gaze director Elizabeth Talbot said: “We are proud to share our new facility, which will be an ideal showcase for some very worthy auctions and events long into the future.

“These will complement our ongoing regular weekly auctions, which will continue to grow and develop elsewhere on our busy site.”
