A Pulham Market-based theatre company is bringing the story of the Burston strike to the stage. The debut performance will be 100 years since the strike began.
The play will mark the longest strike in history, led by teachers and married couple Tom and Annie Higdon, which began in 1914, and ended in 1939.
Stuff of Dreams is working in conjunction with the Burston Memorial Committee and the Trades Union Congress as part of the centenary celebrations on April 1.
The Bricks of Burston focuses on the two educators who fought to change the poverty and injustice inherent in their society. They are described as blackballed, reviled and persecuted by many but they also provoked loyalty, trust and devotion from those they battled to help.
It is billed as a powerful and touching piece of theatre that will explore memory, remembrance, relationships and change.
Speaking about the production, artistic director of Stuff of Dreams, Cordelia Spence, said: “I became increasingly interested in Tom and Annie’s story.
“They were incredible people, and by all accounts they were a very devoted couple.
“So I felt that a story about the couple was something that would really work on a stage.”
The Stuff of Dreams Theatre Company says it acts as a platform for local talent while joining the community together in celebration of the inspirational local stories that make up the rich history of East Anglia.
This will be the company’s fourth touring production and their second original play. Following the success of Love Left Hanging, based on the famous Red Barn Murder, The Bricks of Burston sees the same team - director Cordelia Spence, co-writers Emma MacLusky and Anthony Cule - reunited for their next adventure into Norfolk history.
The production is touring many venues, starting at Diss High School on April 1, 7pm, The Bank, Eye, April 12 at 7.30pm, Framlingham Earl High School, April 25, 7.30pm and the Fisher Theatre, Bungay, May 15, 7.30pm,
