The Lophams-based Kumo Judo Club held an interclub tournament at the weekend to assist in the development of novice players throughout the Eastern Counties.

A total of 33 young players attended from six to 12 years old and from clubs in Norfolk, Cambridge and Suffolk.

Club official Howard Oates said: "The event was aimed at encouraging young players, so all participants received a medal."

The Diss Judo Club took gold with Kai Widderson winning all his contests on Ippon throws and James Pipe taking silver in the toughest weight group of the day.

Kumo Judo club twins Tommy and George Finch pulled off a family double, taking gold with Ruby Douglas also taking an excellent gold in her first ever tournament.

There were bronze medals for Joe Douglas, Freddy Palmer, Joe Coutts, Carys Fowler, Josh Fowler and Finlay Clark.

Mr Oates said: "These events are very important as the British Judo Association has introduced theory only gradings and have removed the fighting element.

"As such the only experience children will gain from the competitive side of judu is through tournaments."
