The medieval curtain walls of Framlingham Castle rang to the sounds of clashing swords and clinking armour this week as children took time out from their summer holidays to lay seige to the stronghold.

However, storming the castle walls was all in the interests of education as the keen students of warfare went back to Knight School to learn what it was like to be a medieval knight.

The week-long event is just one of a programme of activities run in the castle grounds and hosted by professional re-enactors.

It will be followed by Fool School next week, from Monday, August 11, to Friday, August 15, when children can fool around as they learn juggling and diablo skills with English Heritage's very own fool.

There will also be A Grand Castle Treasure Trail from Monday, August 18, to Friday, August 22, which involves a trail around the castle with a prize at the end of the hunt.

For further information about any of the activities, or to find out more about Framlingham Castle, visit www.english-heritage.org.uk or ring 0870 3331181.
