Organisers said it was the most successful festival to date, with hundreds attending concerts, literary discussions, street theatre, workshops and a weekend of live music.

"Everything has been a sell-out," said organiser Margaret Griffiths.

"The triumph of the festival was the lunchtime concert on Wednesday because it was a chance to try out something new."

The festival, which started last Tuesday, featured singing trio Fascinating Aida – fresh from a run in the West End and the Edinburgh Festival.

There was a chance to enjoy An Evening of Roger Deakin performed by his friends.

A total of 82 people took part in the Historical Walk Around Harleston on Saturday and hundreds visited The Best of Harleston exhibition.

The seventh annual festival finished with a live music weekend at The Swan Hotel, featuring a number of local bands, and a family fun day with stalls, rides and a collection of classic cars.

Street entertainment, including a remote-controlled cycling panda to celebrate the handover of the Olympic flag from Beijing to London, was provided by South Norfolk Council.

"As far as we are concerned, the festival was a resounding success," said Mrs Griffiths.
