A total of 329 plastic ducks meandered along a quarter-mile course of the River Dove, battling against a strong wind, blowing many of them into the bank, and other hazards.

Crossing the winning line first was the duck "adopted" by Katy Curtis, who collected a prize of £75. Runner-up was Mrs Shepherd (£50) and third was Shirley Huggins (£25).

Other prizes were awarded to Mrs Jude, Sue Lancaster, Ben Hammond, Teresa Grout, Adams and Hucklesby.

The event was supported by Eye Music Day Group, who ran a tombola, and Eye Scouts, who manned a barbecue and also held a cake stall.

Organiser Philip Weiss who, with family and helpers spent most of the previous week clearing the site to enable spectators to gain access to the river, was pleased with the success of the event, which he is hoping will be held each year.

Proceeds are expected to total more than £600. The cost of the ducks was met by the town council from the Mayor's Amenities Fund.
