Chart toppers Showaddywaddy, Hot Chocolate and Suzi Quatro, as well as a host of local bands, played to the large crowd on the Recreation Ground.

Breckland Council launched Breckfest, a district wide festival of sport, leisure and culture to mark the handover of the Olympic Games from Beijing to London this summer and the close of the Paralympics Games 2008.

District councillor Stephen Askew said: "We are delighted at the success of the concert and hope the event will become an annual occurrence in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics.

"We would like to see a legacy going on to the London games and I think it has been an excellent turnout for an event of this scale. We are all very excited that it has gone so well," he said.

The pop groups were booked in for a meal at the town's Mulberry Tree restaurant, although only Hot Chocolate took up the offer.

Suzi Quatro proved her rock star credentials by reportedly turning down the offer of a meal and instead asking for a whiskey.

Three young bands from Dereham, The Union Jacks, Dysfunction, and The Crush, got the chance to play in front of their biggest audience ahead of the main acts.

The festival took place between August 24 and September 14 and hundreds of children and adults had got involved in a range of activities including music making, dancing, creative writing, bowling, football, running, boxing and cycling before Saturday's main Breckfest concert.
