Skiing: Baldwin is best British Junior Alpine racer

FOLLOWING a successful ski racing season, TJ Baldwin has been confirmed as the best British Junior Alpine ski racer.

On the end of season FIS (International Ski Federation) world ranking points list which has just been released, the 18-year-old from Tharston was ranked No1 Junior (U21) in all five disciplines (Downhill, Super G, Giant Slalom, Slalom and Super Combined).

The rankings come after a number of excellent top 15 results in international races throughout the Alps during February and March, including an outright win in the English Alpine champs Giant Slalom in Italy.

This was combined with his almost total dominance of the British Junior championships in France during April, where he won four of the five events and was second in the other.

TJ has also broken into the exclusive top 30 in the World Junior rankings in both Super G (28th) and Downhill (30th). He is also 44th in the Super Combined and 95th in the Giant Slalom rankings.

"I'm very pleased with how most of the season went. It's great to be No1 in Britain and I'm very happy to be top 30 in the world in two events," said Baldwin.

"I missed a lot of the first half of the season through bad weather and had six weeks off through my injury so I didn't really start racing until February.

"I'm now training hard through the summer months on my fitness to prepare for the upcoming season where I'll be racing the full programme of Europa cup Downhill and Super G events. I'm aiming for a top 20 finish in any of these as it will qualify me for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

"I'm pushing the senior team members really hard to get my place there. My other goal is to get into the top 10 at the World Junior champs.

"I came 24th last season so I'm pretty confident I can achieve that."
