Petanque: County coup for Diss

Norfolk's top petanque players are heading to Diss.

The Diss Waveney Petanque Club has been chosen to host the annual county triples competition.

The prestigious tournament will take place at the club's new terrain at Diss Town Football Club on April 18.

It follows a series of favourable reviews from visitors, bringing the new facility to the attention of county officials.

Club chairman Cyril Bromley said: "This is very good news for the club.

"The past year has been a major project to build the new terrain and this is in recognition of the huge effort of all club members in getting the pistes finished to such a high standard."

On the piste, The Harleston Cherry Tree-based Diss Waveney team, L'Arbre Cerise, lost 2-1 at Gorleston Bloaters in Division Two of the City of Norwich Winter League.

The visitors made a slow start at the James Paget Hospital terrain and slumped to a 13-7 defeat in the opening triples.

Dave Marsh held the experienced Peter Astle to a close opening four ends in the singles but then fell away to lose 13-6.

It was left to team captain Steven Penny and Scott Marsh to pick up a point for the team with a 13-3 victory in the pairs.

Le Diss Dimanche needed a 3-0 win at Sprowston Hedonists to go top of the table.

That was the final score, but unfortunately in favour of the hosts.

Dave Smith came closest to picking up a point for the Diss team, going down 13-10 in the singles.
