Joe Kerrison has been crowned an Eastern Counties Schoolboy champion after clinching the 65kg title in a devastating display in Wisbech.
The Mendham-based ace, who represents Lowestoft Amateur Boxing Club, overcame his strong opponent O Juchnevis with a determined display.
On the opening bell both boxers moved to the centre of the ring and tried to establish the upper-hand which opened the first round up to fast and aggressive action that went the full round and more.
The action became so intense that even the time keeper did not ring the bell at end of the round as it went over by another minute.
The second round saw Juchnevis bring the fight to Kerrison in the middle of the ring, but soon found himself on the backfoot as the stronger Mendham boxer connected with hard, fast combinations that found their target time and time again.
Kerrison did not have it all his own way though as the Wisbech boxer showed his threat, catching the Lowestoft fighter with several well placed shots.
In the third round the Wisbech boxer went for broke, trying to overwhelm Kerrison but he showed his impressive defensive skills before responding with heavy return punches to head and body as he aimed to press home his dominance in the bout.
At the final bell it was Kerrison’s hand that was raised as the Eastern Counties Schoolboy champion and he will move into the national quarter-finals, which will take place at King’s Lynn tomorrow.
n Elsewhere, Attleborough Boxing Club’s Milo Clay clinched a bronze medal at the Pirkka tournament in Finland but was denied challenging for more due to injury.
Having reached the semi-finals, Clay was involved in a coming together with his opponent in a non-punch-related clash, leaving the youngster with a badly swollen eye.
As a result, the judge stopped the fight to deny Clay any chance of progressing through to the final, leaving him with the consolation of joint-third place and a bronze medal.
There was also further medal success for the club as Charlie Connaughton also won bronze while Marc Riley took silver.
