The Colin Oates Getting Started beginners’ tournament attracted a capacity entry at the weekend with novice judo players travelling from as far away as Sheffield.

Lopham and Diss-based Kumo Judo Club players put in a brilliant display and there were gold medals for Elizabeth and Alex Lawrie, Louis Eaton-Cole, Tom Harmer and Reece Oates.

Silvers went to Archie Turner, Roxy Eaton-Cole, Ben Grant and Francesca Amey, and bronze medals were awarded to Georgina Raven, Joshua Amey, Henry and James Hurst, Aiden Barra and George Eaton-Cole.

Club member Steve Preece narrowly failed in his bid to win a World Veterans medal in Amsterdam, losing just one fight before the bronze medal final.

The club is presenting judo taster sessions throughout the area in schools, which are designed to introduce judo to young players with a minimum of impact.
