Harleston Magpies 0

Harleston Magpies Ladies travelled to in-form Wimbledon, who before the game were sitting third in the table and three points ahead of their visitors.

Magpies started the game brightly, forcing Wimbledon back with a well-worked press.

Emma Lee-Smith, who was welcomed back into the squad for the trip, was a constant threat with a number of driving towards the home goal.

Midway through the first-half it looked like Harleston had found a breakthrough, as Lee-Smith’s shot deceived everyone and hit the post with Licy Whiting well-placed to tap home the rebound.

However, the umpire adjudged there to have been an infringement, although Magpies did not allow their heads to drop and remained in control of the game despite not finding that all-important goal.

After the half-time break Wimbledon came out strongly and put the visitors under a lot of pressure, but the possession was evenly matched.

Wimbledon took the lead 15 minutes into the second-half though after a quick breakaway and an excellent strike into the Magpies net.

Despite Harleston having their own chances to level the game, Wimbledon’s quick forwards were a constant threat and the visitors had to defend a number of short corners to keep the score at 1-0.

Although the result was a huge disappointment for Magpies, the management were pleased with a good team performance against a strong Wimbledon team.

Harleston conclude their 2015-16 season when they host second place Cambridge City at Weybread tomorrow (2pm).

Heading into their final game of the campaign Magpies occupy fifth place in the Conference East table, with a win this weekend almost certain to guarantee them a top half finish this season.
