Harleston Magpies 3

Cambridge City 1

Harleston Magpies finished their season on a high with a pleasing 3-1 home victory over second-place Cambridge City on Saturday.

After losing their last two games, Magpies wanted to finish the season with a win, but knew it would be tough final encounter of the campaign.

The first half started with Cambridge putting the hosts under a lot of pressure with some quick, attacking hockey.

Harleston’s defence managed to limit the shots on goal, but short corners were conceded and it took some great saves from Charlotte Lee-Smith to keep the score at 0-0.

As the half continued, Magpies started to put the visitors under pressure, with the breakthrough coming when Susan Wessels dribbled round the Cambridge defence and calmly slotted the ball home.

Both teams created chances but neither could convert them as Harleston took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break.

In the second half Magpies knew Cambridge would try to come out stronger, with the game continuing to be end-to-end.

Harleston won a series of short corner and managed to find the back board when Wessels struck a reverse stick shot to make it 2-0.

The second goal gave the hosts more confidence to continue attacking and pressing high up the pitch.

Magpies scored their third goal when Charlotte Harrison passed the ball to Lizzie Clymer, who was well positioned on the post to score.

Cambridge did not give up and managed to win a penalty stroke, which was converted to make it 3-1.

It was a brilliant way for Harleston to finish the season and everyone was in high spirits for the end of season bash, which saw Abby Gooderham (Young Player) and Emma Lee-Smith (Player) pick up awards for their efforts this season.

The win ensured Magpies finished their campaign in fifth place in the Investec League Women’s Conference East table.

n Harleston Magpies VII ended their Empresa Norfolk Women’s League Division Three campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Loddon II.

The match started with Loddon taking possession of the ball and keeping it for the majority of the first half, yet their efforts at goal were thwarted by some brave defending by the visitors.

Karen Hunt stopped any forwards in their tracks, while Daphne Beckett tackled the opposition with skill and Ella Drake made some fine runs up the wing.

Harleston had more of the ball in the second half and created a few chances at goal, however just before the final whistle it was Loddon who found a crucial breakthrough to win the game 1-0.
