Leigh Sitch is hoping the Harleston Magpies can start their indoor league season with a bang at the East Senior Indoor Championships this weekend.
The Magpies captain will be leading the team out in their four pool games against Old Loughts, St Albans, West Herts and Ipswich when the tournament takes place in Cambridge tomorrow.
And ahead of their Super 6s Championship Division Two North campaign at the start of next year, Sitch has targeted victory this weekend as the perfect platform for a potential promotion push back into Division One.
“We got relegated from Division One last year so our aim is for promotion this year to get back there,” Sitch said.
“We’ve got a warm-up tournament this weekend which we won last year, so it would be nice to win it again heading into the rest of the indoor season.”
The indoor season allows teams to include two players who did not feature in their outdoor season so far, with Harleston electing to welcome back to of their former players in Carl Sitch and Chris Barber.
“It will be nice to play alongside my brother Carl again,” the Magpies skipper said. “He now plays outdoors for Teddington who we played against earlier in the season.
“They beat us that day, but it will be good to play with him, rather than against him, during the indoor season.”
Following this weekend’s warm-up tournament, Harleston then travel to St Albans for their Division Two North campaign, which runs over two days from January 9-10.
Barford Tigers and Bournville are the only other teams confirmed so far, with East, North and Midlands qualifiers yet to be confirmed.
Sitch’s Magpies will be looking for a top three finish that weekend in order to move onto the Division Two tournament, which is being held at the University of West England two weeks later on January 23-24.
A top two finish in Division Two would then secure Harleston a place back in Division One for the 2016-17 season.
