Norwich City fan Craig Daniels reflects on a nightmare day in the FA Cup
‘The magic of the cup’ — that old cliche churned out every time there’s a giant killing in football’s oldest knockout competition.
Hereford, Sutton United and Wrexham have all had their day in the sun and now, at the expense of Norwich City, you can add Luton Town to that list.
Last Saturday was an absolute disaster for The Canaries as they crashed out of the FA Cup in embarrassing style.
Separated by four divisions and 85 league places, this should have been a walkover for City but an appalling, gutless display led to one of the biggest shocks in cup history.
Some have blamed City boss Hughton for starting with mostly fringe players, but make no mistake, they should have been good enough to win the game.
Players who should be banging Hughton’s door down for a start in the league failed in humiliating fashion.
The likes of Elliot Bennett and David Fox, who I and others have been championing, let themselves down. More importantly, they let the fans down.
It was a lethargic and almost arrogant performance from players that have something to prove and I suspect some of them won’t be in the first team for a while. Some (step forward Leon Barnett) may not wear a yellow shirt again.
This result will be a stain on their careers and they won’t be allowed to forget it.
Where The Canaries failed, Luton excelled and I applaud them for their attitude, hard work and counter-attacking football.
The players and 4,000 fans did non-League football proud and deserve everything they get on the back of this result.
City fans are starting to look over their shoulders and we need to see an immediate improvement in the next two games against QPR and Fulham, two sides struggling near the bottom.
Four points from six should be the minimum target to prevent a drop into the Premier League danger zone.
