Mellis FC manager Simon Nichols is targeting a memorable treble this season after his side secured the Suffolk FA Sunday Shield, writes Nick Garnham.

The Bury and District Sunday League side defeated Holbrook Swan 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra-time in Sunday’s final at Stowmarket Town FC.

And having beaten CFC Bury 3-0 in the Bury Sunday League Division Two Cup final the previous Sunday, Mellis are now on course for a treble.

“We started slowly and we were very lucky to go in 1-0 up at half-time, but we got more into it as the game went on,” said Nichols, following Sunday’s penalty shoot-out success.

“In the second period of extra-time when our superior fitness told, we had plenty of chances to win it – I don’t know how the ball didn’t go in – so I think we deserved it over the 120 minutes.

We put ourselves under pressure by missing the first penalty, but then Lewis (Riches) made a good save from their second penalty to put us back in it.

“Fortunately for me we had five players who were willing to take them.

“We have five games to go and if we win four of them we will win the league. It is our 50th anniversary at Mellis this year, so to win the treble this season would be nice.”

Second-placed Mellis, currently nine points adrift of CFC Bury but with four games in hand, return to Division Two action on Sunday by hosting basement-boys Black Boy.
