FA VASE

FIRST ROUND PROPER

Diss Town 2

Basildon United 3

Diss Town came out on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller as they were eliminated from the FA Vase after a 3-2 defeat to Basildon United.

Basildon were putting some pace on to dangerous crosses and with central defender Paul Shaves a constant menace in the air at free kicks and corner kicks.

This combination of features was behind the opening goal in the 6th minute. Play developed down the Basildon left and a deep cross was headed in from eight yards out by Shaves.

Diss were handed a golden opportunity to level in the 21st minute when they were awarded a penalty following a foul on Kyle Downes. Jason Armes stepped forward to equalise, firing into the corner of the net.

Diss then went ahead with a goal of real quality in the 27th minute. Sam Page chased the ball towards the right hand corner flag, played it back 15 yards for Self to take inside and head towards the penalty area.

He laid the ball into the path of Downes and took the return before sending his low right foot shot into the corner of the net from nine yards out.

Diss keeper Matt Powley was forced to make a smart save three minutes later to keep out a Brad Warner 25 yard shot, the ball fell for Brad Hunter, but he was crowded out by the home defence and Diss went on the attack.

However, Basildon equalised in the 40th minute as Lindisipho Mtyanda hit a 20 yard shot which deflected off Ben Lewis and Jason Cole, leaving Powley with no chance to keep the effort out.

Diss started the second half brightly as Armes curled his free kick on to the bar in the 51st minute with Page only able to divert the rebound into the arms of the goalkeeper from close range as he was forced to react quickly.

Late in the game play switched from end to end. Downes had a shot blocked by the fists of the goalkeeper and Appleton made a goal line block to deny Shaves at a corner.

The game moved into the sixth minute of added time, and with the good sized crowd ready for extra time, Basildon played a hopeful looking long ball down the middle of the field.

Hunter chased it and Powley came out of his area to attempt to head clear.

However, the ball moved to his right and substitute Fayid Nyanja moved towards the ball managing to capitalise on the situation by squeezing the ball in from an acute angle as Appleton raced back in vain in an attempt to block the effort from going in.

There was only time for The Tangerines to kick off before the final whistle sounded.

The Tangerines will be aiming to bounce back when they host Halstead Town in the First Division Knockout Cup on Saturday (3pm).
