Season tickets at Town are going to be an incredibly hard sell this summer — especially after so many false dawns.

After a decent run against some of the division’s better sides in a fine February, March is probably best described as mediocre.

Despite our unbeaten run stretching to eight games, it is only one win in 12. That leaves Town just seven points off the bottom three, and the quality of performance has dropped.

We’ve seen it all over the years since relegation from the top flight in 2002 in terms of offers to entice supporters to part with their cash — substantial amounts of money off to those who renew should we reach the Premier League again, to seeing our club breed a generation of youngsters to carry us forward for years to come. Neither have materialised so far, although we’ve had the odd near miss along the way.

And as Ipswich Town prepares to send out season ticket renewal forms in the post, it would be nice to have something to get us out of our seats.

While I don’t think we will get sucked into a relegation scrap, it would be far too arrogant to suggest we are too good to go down.

To me, it feels as if Mick McCarthy’s time as boss is coming to an end.

Has he been a victim of his own success? Very probably.

He turned us from relegation fodder to promotion candidates — and while expectation has risen in that time, this season has been his worst since arriving in 2012.

I will always be grateful for the job he has done — but for an ever-growing amount of supporters, he has passed the point of no return.

Would a new manager do better under the current set of circumstances?

It’s hard to tell.

But for many, it’s a change that needs to happen for them to renew their ticket.
