Ipswich Town fan Russell Claydon believes the Blues could have made a fatal error
Manager after manager has been questioned ahead of requiring a point — and replied they ‘never play for a draw’.
Not our Mick McCarthy though.
After a tedious stalemate at Huddersfield on Saturday, he said: “Coming here today, I’d have taken a point. I wouldn’t have even got on the bus, I’d have stayed down in Ipswich.”
I bet a fair few Blues fans now wish they had.
Weirdly, it could be a point we look back on and say it helped save us.
But equally, and more possibly in my opinion, it could be the missed opportunity that cost us a move to League One.
In my book you don’t avoid relegation by not being beaten, you do though through scoring goals that win you games.
Huddersfield had conceded 10 in two games before kick-off and to go there and not even test that fragile defence was criminal really.
I’m not going to be too critical of McCarthy though; he has brought us back from the dead after inheriting a very poor squad.
But for his plan to work, we have to win our home games.
But when we have failed to win in 70 per cent of those (12/17) with five left (Leicester, Bolton, Leeds, Hull, Palace, Birmingham), you have to be concerned.
Leicester, within touching distance of a top two place after Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Blackburn, are the first hurdle at Portman Road on Saturday (3pm).
Their need to attack will open up avenues for us to exploit, but whether we are capable, or can keep out Chris Wood, nemesis David Nugent and co long enough to make it count, remains to be seen.
Then it’s a daunting trip to Billy Davies’ reinvigorated Nottingham Forest on Tuesday — three points from one is clearly better than a point from both.
Blues stat: New loan signing Reece Brown, younger brother of Wes Brown, is the sixth domestic loan at the club. Only five can be named in a squad.
