FIRST DIVISION KNOCKOUT CUP

FIRST ROUND

Debenham LC 2 Ipswich Wanderers 5 (after extra-time)

Debenham LC were left to rue throwing away a two goal half-time lead as they ultimately crashed out of the competition after extra time.

Progression to the second round looked a strong possibility at half-time as Nathan Vincent’s close range opener after 37 minutes was added to by Ben Green just two minutes later, as his speculative 25-yard effort flew past the despairing dive of Wanderer’s Aaron Read.

However, that was all set to change after the interval as with 56 minutes gone Jack Severy reduced the deficit before Craig Jennings 70th minute header drew Wanderers level and sent the tie into extra-time.

Just five minutes into the extra 30, the visitors were gifted the opportunity to complete an unlikely turnaround when Vincent was adjudged to have committed a foul in the area, resulting in a penalty.

Wanderers captain Lee Smith took responsibility and confidently dispatched the spot kick, while Tom Hardwick was dismissed in the aftermath of the award.

The same player then extended his side’s advantage further in the 104th minute, again scoring from the spot, before Luke Read wrapped up proceedings with a fifth on the counter attack to secure Wanderer’s place in the next round.
