FIRST DIVISION

Debenham LC 0

Needham Market Reserves 3

Debenham LC slipped to a second successive defeat in the First Division as they went down to a 2-0 loss at home to Needham Market Reserves.

Needham looked a lot different from when Debenham beat them 1-5 including former professional Karl Duguid, who played for Colchester United.

The Hornets started strongly and it seemed only a matter of time before they took the lead but the young Marketmen goal keeper was equal to everything Debenham could throw at him having at least 10 chances in the first half.

He managed to save a fierce shot from Marcus Josiah and thwart Luke Austin’s follow up for a corner.

From the corner Needham broke away at speed with a two on one and slipped it past the exposed Sammy Chilvers to take the lead against the tide of Debenham attacks.

The home side were certainly putting in the effort for little reward as Luke Austin put in Jake Gathercole for a curling shot which hit the right post, came back to Austin who put it to bed only to see the flag cancelling it out.

Needham took full advantage as the Hornets all went up for a free kick, which failed to reach, allowing the visitors to break in a direct foot race resulting in Sam Chilvers picking the ball out of the net again.

By this time the Hornets looked like a spent force and the heart was finally stopped as another slack defensive slip let in a Needham forward to slot home and seal the Marketmen’s first points of the season.

The setback leaves Staurt Reavell’s side in ninth place in the First Division table on 18 points, 16 points of early pacesetters Wivenhoe Town and only four clear of Cornard United and the bottom three places.

Debenham have a welcome break from league action as they look to bounce back in the Thurlow Nunn First Division Knockout Cup with a visit from Haverhill Borough tomorrow (3pm). Borough sit 13th in the table, three points behind Debenham.
