Former Diss Rugby Club duo Will Owen and Thomas West be aiming to help England Under-20s build on the momentum of a maiden victory at this year’s Six Nations tournament and kick-start their campaign.
Following on from a disappointing 21-15 defeat to Wales in their tournament opener, England bounced back in style with an emphatic 61-0 victory over Italy at the Blackfields in Plymouth.
The match itself proved a memorable occasion for the pair with Owen, who is from Eye getting his name on the scoresheet with a try, while West — who lives in Pulham St Mary — was given his first taste of action after replacing Ellis Genge on 70 minutes.
And having helped the side to their first points of the campaign, Leicester Tigers’ flanker Owen and Wasps player West will be hoping for a repeat performance in a big test against Ireland in Dublin next Friday.
Speaking after the victory over Italy, head coach Jon Callard praised his side’s response after a difficult opening encounter against the Welsh.
“We’re really pleased with the performance from the lads particularly against a physical and passionate Italian side,” he said. “The response from last week was spot on and it puts us in a good place.
