Captain’s concern over lack of youth players
EAST Harling captain Barry Wells is concerned other clubs are taking the best youth players in the area as his team prepare for their season opener away to Norwich Bystanders next Saturday (2pm).
Wells stated that bigger cricket clubs are attracting young cricketers away from East Harling, who play in Lucas Fettes Norfolk League Division One.
He said: “The main problem we have is the lack of youth coming through because we haven’t got a good youth set-up.
“We’re losing out young players in our catchment area to other clubs so that could be a potential problem in the future.”
Despite this, Wells remains certain the club can compete in the division.
He said: “We hope to press on and do a bit better this season.
“We haven’t brought anybody into the club, but we’ve retained the same squad from last year so our experience should benefit us.”
On the other hand, Norfolk Cricket Alliance Division One side Topcroft are benefiting from a strong youth set-up.
Captain James Goodfellow hope they can inspire his team to improve on last season’s mid-table finish, starting away to Norwich A tomorrow (1pm).
He said: “We want to build on last season where we finished a safe distance from the drop.”
Goodfellow is set on giving experience to younger players in the hope of building a promotion-winning season in the future.
He said: “I think we could get promotion maybe three or four years in the future. But at the moment the club is in a rebuilding stage.
“The main youth guy to watch out for is Tim Alexander, who looks a very good prospect.
“He is a strong batsman and a quick bowler, but he’s only available for the second half of the season.
“Jack Nobbs is another youngster to keep an eye open for.
“We’re a fairly young side with a good team spirit and it’s a decent place to be.”
Goodfellow was also pleased after Topcroft beat Premier Division side Lowestoft in a friendly match before the start of the season.
“We looked comfortable and it was a great result because they’re a Premier Division side so it’s good to see we could hold our own.” Goodfellow added.
Meanwhile, Garboldisham’s captain Danny Cash is hoping his side can get promoted back into Division Two after their relegation last season.
Cash said: “We hope to get promoted and to bounce straight back up to the Second Division.
“If everything goes to plan and we play to our potential then there’s no reason why we cannot get promoted.”
The club have added to their ranks with the signings of James Shepherd from Diss, Tim Courridge and Christian William.
Garboldisham start their season away to Acle A tomorrow (1pm).
