London League Two North, Woodford 8 Diss RFC 23: THIS was Diss' eighth consecutive league win and was achieved with a much improved performance compared to recent games.
The Blues executed a game plan to gain dominance in the scrum and allow the backs to flourish.
Diss' forwards were able to make strong progress upfield and soon found themselves crossing the five-metre line. Despite the maul being pulled down, the forwards re-set, and the pressure paid. The pack crossed the try-line with prop Tim Groom grounding the ball for a try, after just two minutes, which was not converted. Unfortunately, as has happened before this season, Diss started to give away penalties, one of which was kicked successfully by Woodfood fly-half Nick Ford.
But the visitors continued to enjoy the majority of territory and possession, and added to their lead when a maul was brought down, before crossing the line for Groom to score his second try of the game.
Full-back Chris Beaird converted.
Woodford kicked off the second half and the ball was caught by fly-half Zac Seaward, who was hit by a late tackle. Beaird converted the resulting penalty.
This seemed to motivate Woodford as they began their best phase of play in the match, which culminated in Simo Sigakelele going over for an unconverted try. A knee injury forced Beaird to leave the field, and he was replaced at full-back by Andy Thorpe.
The Woodford cause became more difficult when their flanker Ed Gooday was yellow carded for persistent offside. Diss increased the pressure on their opponents, and the forwards made a good break upfield.
The ball was spun out to Thorpe, who drew an opponent, before timing his pass to perfection to Alex Kelsall to score in a corner. Adam Williamson missed the conversion.
After a promising attack was brought to a halt when Woodford went off their feet and killed the ball, Diss were awarded a penalty in front of the opposition posts. Williamson made no mistake with the kick.
