Martial arts: Belgian success but Diss site is under threat

The Lopham-based Kumo Judo club kicked off their new season with a tournament in Bredene in Belgium, claiming four golds and a silver.
The event was used as a warm up for more important events to come, as Colin Oates took gold at under-73kg, in preparation for his forthcoming World Cup challenge in Norway.
Clare Moore took gold at under-63kg in anticipation of her British Masters defence and daughter Gemma Moore rattled off four straight wins to take gold at under-52kg, as she prepares for a British junior championship challenge. Britain's reserve for the forthcoming junior world championships in Bangkok, Thomas Turner, took gold in the over 100kg category.
Emma Paflin returned to action to win silver at the senior under-52k category and David Oates returned to action, following a wrist injury, to place fifth at under-66kg.
While the club's site in Lopham continues to thrive, the Diss site at the community centre in Shelfanger Road is under threat of closure. The numbers on the mat have dwindled to lows of four and five players.
The town can boast one of the oldest judo sites in the British Judo Association, dating back 30 years, but since the club was saved from closure by Kumo two years ago the numbers have at most only bordered on the barely sustainable.
The Diss site is in desperate need of juniors and seniors if it is to survive beyond the end of the year.
