Gliding: National competition finishes on a high
THE nine-day open class nationals drew to a close at Tibenham on Sunday, with Steve James claiming the top spot.
Jones, from Berkshire, sealed first place, followed by Sussex's Ian Ashdown and Peter Harvey, of Buckinghamshire. Jones and Harvey will now go on to represent the UK in the World Championships in Germany.
Gliders managed to compete in five of the nine days, with Saturday's racing falling victim to the weather with the temperature too low for the gliders to get enough height. But they were able to get up in the final day with competitors flying a 320km route to Potton, Bury St Edmunds, Caxton Gibbet and Diss, before returning to Tibenham.
Competition secretary Tim Davies said: "Flying on five out of nine days is not bad and is the best competition we've had in two years, when we have been averaging two out of nine days."
