You would think with Ipswich undefeated in five league games during September, that the Blue Army would be on the crest of a wave.
But this is far from the reality for most Town supporters.

Yes, we are better than we were in awful August but not by a lot.

Whereas in March and April results are everything, at this stage of season performances still mean a lot; they set the tone of where your campaign is destined.

While a 3-0 win over Barnsley on Tuesday was just the result we needed, the way in which we got it left plenty to be concerned about.

I was happy to defend Town's mediocre performance against Crystal Palace on Saturday, with the fact that the Londoners finished in the play-offs with the same team last season and have merely made a slow start.

Palace were always going to be a more stubborn opponent to breakdown than many Blues fans gave them credit for.

But three days later, the second from bottom Tykes were a team that should have been put to the sword.

Instead we had to rely on our keeper to keep us in the game at one end and two dreadful mistakes by their keeper to find a breakthrough at the other.

We have all seen keepers drop clangers before – Bryan Gunn comes to mind – but never have I seen one do it twice in one game like Heinz Muller did on Tuesday.

If 2009 turns out to be a vintage year for Town, a German goalkeeper may be seen as the catalyst for the success as much as a Russian linesman was for England in 1966.

Barnsley managed to force 18 corners and a better team then the Tykes would have had the game wrapped up before Muller's input.

The most disappointing element of this unconvincing performance was Town's inability to keep possession, with the biggest culprits Ivan Campo and Owen Garvan – the latest two players to come round on what is the conveyor belt that is Town's centre of midfield.

Magilton's constant tinkering in this department is meant to give us a freshness and energy but instead the Town engine room is coughing and spluttering like an old banger on a winter's morning.

The Ipswich performances are definitely lacking something at the moment but we cannot under-estimate how much this secret ingredient may be plain old confidence.

The fans may not have taken much comfort from our five-game undefeated run but hopefully the players have.

If they get a win at Charlton tomorrow, we could even find ourselves in a play-off spot by dinner time and the nerves will start to calm.
