Ridgeons League Division One, Debenham LC 0 Ipswich Wanderers 0:Debenham LC warmed up for their FA Vase clash at Leiston on Saturday by playing out a disappointing goalless draw with Ipswich Wanderers.
A strong wind blowing down the ground meant there were distinctively different fortunes for the two teams either side of half-time.
Having defended staunchly in the opening period, when the Hornets deserved their good fortune, Louis Johnson blasted a clearance into Shaun French and was relieved to see the ball fly narrowly wide of a post.
Debenham were expected to turn the wind to their advantage after the interval.
The half started promisingly, James Heathcote's cross was headed down by Stuart Jopling for Kevin Barker to smash a shot against the large frame of Wanderers keeper Gary Hammond.
Unfortunately, Warren Taylor-Holt's finish could not match the build up involving Jon Ince, Stuart Jopling and James Heathcote, as Taylor-Holt leant back in striking Rob Kemp's cross over the bar.
Debenham improved with the introduction of Dale Vince after 65 minutes. Hammond was forced to kick away a shot by Jopling.
The keeper surpassed that stop, when he flung himself across his goal to turn aside Jopling's header from an excellent cross by Ince.
With the match moving into stoppage time the visitors almost shocked Debenham. A poor pass allowed Adam Potter a clear sight of goal but he volleyed straight at Johnson.
Right at the death, substitute Ian Gedny's cross appeared to be dropping beyond Hammond but just cleared the bar.
Debenham LC: Johnson, Powling, Ince, Kemp, French, Norman, Taylor-Holt (Gedny 83), Barker, Jopling, Heathcote (Smith 83), Sadler (Vince 65).
Man of the match: Jon Ince – Showed solid defending, while always looking to create something going forward.
