Shot putter Danny Nobbs is champing at the bit to get started in the Paralympics, with Great Britain's gold rush in Beijing only adding to his excitement.
The Attleborough athlete will fly out with the ParalympicsGB squad next week to go to their holding camp in Macau, in preparation for competing in his event at the spectacular 91,000 capacity Bird's Nest Stadium on September 16.

"To know that I will be out there in a couple of weeks is really exciting," said the 28-year-old, who has kept a keen eye on GB's success in the Olympics over the last two weeks.

"All of the Great Britain athletes have done really well and in the Paralympics we want to carry that on and hopefully continue the success.

"I'm really excited about the whole experience. Everyone has been so supportive and asking when I'm flying out – it's been quite mind-blowing."

Nobbs' preparation has been a world away from the iconic Bird's Nest Stadium.

He has been doing four weights sessions a week at Vinnies Gym in Attleborough and three technical sessions at his uncle's farm in Rocklands, with the assistance of his wife Tracy, who is a PE teacher at Attleborough High School.

Nobbs believes his preparation is right on track to give his best performance in the pressurised atmosphere of the Paralympics.

He said: "My training programme is exactly where I want it to be and I'm injury free.

"I've stuck to the training programme that I planned a year in advance. There is a temptation to train harder but I have stuck to my plan to peak at the right time."

Nobbs flies out a week tomorrow to Macau and will then move on to Beijng for the Games on September 8.

He will be backed by a strong travelling contingent of friends and family in China, including his wife, parents Maggie and Stephen and younger sister, Kate.

Nobbs, who will compete in the F54 (wheelchair field athletes) category, will throw three times in a qualifying round on Tuesday, September 16, and then if he finishes in the top eight, he will throw three more times in the final on the same day.

The former Attleborough High School pupil is refusing to talk up his medal hopes and is, initially, targeting a place in the final.

Nobbs, who threw a personal best of 9.14m this year, said: "I'm definitely going to give 110 per cent and if that brings a PB in the process, then great.

"My target was to qualify for London 2012, so to make the team for Beijing is a bonus.

"It will be great to go out to Beijing and see how everything works. Going into the London Games in 2012 there will be high expectations for the GB team to come out with medals, so it will be great to get this experience under my belt."
