DISS' Stephen James beat a top-level field to become overall winner in the four hour class of the national White Bike British Mountain Bike race held in Brandon Country Park, Thetford, on Sunday.
The first round race got off to a frenetic start, with newly-signed professional Billy Whenman, James and two other riders setting a blistering pace and putting a big gap back to the rest of the field.
James, 31, said: "We started so fast I knew that the guys around me would not keep that pace up for the length of the race. I have been training really hard, 14 to 20 hours per week, and know I'm in good shape right now so I just tried to conserve as much energy as I could and really push towards the end."
The pace took its toll on other riders and left James out in the lead three-and-a-half hours into the race. After that is was just a matter or trying to keep smooth and quick for the last lap, which James did to take his first big win.
James will compete in the second round of the competition on December 7.
