Cricket: Diss' good start comes crashing down to earth
Lovewell Blake Norfolk cricket Alliance,
Division One, Bradenham 187-2 Diss 186-7: DISS' fine early season form came crashing to an end with an eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Bradenham on Saturday.
On a scorching hot day, with no breeze, Diss were sent in to bat.
Will Dawson's tough time with the bat continued, as he was first to go on just four.
James Wilby and Simon Cooper looked in good touch and built up a 46-run partnership, with some fine shots which thundered to the boundary.
Unfortunately neither could go on to build a big score with Cooper being caught on 21, followed soon after by James Wilby who was bowled on 27.
Diss hoped that the Tooke brothers could apply themselves and rescue them from 57-3.
But skipper Dave Tooke came and went for four, while Rob was ran out for 17.
At 95-5, Diss looked to be falling well short of posting a competitive total, fortunately Liam Brown and Chris Cooper managed to claw Diss' total back to respectability.
Brown, batting at number six, scored a tidy 28.
Cooper had his eye in and managed to blaze three huge sixes on his way to an unbeaten 53, with good support from club captain Mike Tooke, who notched up 20 and Henry Rush (3no).
Disciplined bowling was required if Diss had any chance of winning the contest, both Chris Germon and Rush caused trouble for Findlay and Thurley opening for Bradenham.
Germon picked up the first wicket, following some tight bowling when he had Findlay caught behind by wicketkeeper Ben Green for just six.
Germon then snatched a second when he removed Thurley (6) lbw.
At 28-2, Diss fancied their chances.
South African import Mostert, whose brother scored a century for Lowestoft against Diss in their pre-season encounter was joined by experienced campaigner Dewing.
The pair had easy pickings with the Diss support bowling being well below their normal high standards.
Reliable bowlers, such as Simon Cooper and Rob Tooke, could not even manage to break the trend.
The pair helped themselves to a 160 run partnership with Dewing ending up on 58 not out, and Mostert securing his century with a highly impressive 110 not out.
Credit must got to Germon, who ended up with the figures of 2-17, on a day where most struggled.
Diss will look to put this performance behind them when they travel to Mattishall tomorrow.
Man of the match was Chris Cooper.
