JUST hours before Joe Calzaghe took to the ring for possibly the last time in Madison Square Garden, many of Attleborough Community Gym's boxers competed in their first fights at Connaught Hall on Saturday.
The evening's boxing tournament was dominated by fighters from the town's gym, which opened in March and is a branch of the Dereham and District club.

"The show was a great success for the boxers, coaches and guests alike," said Pete Berryman, who is a coach at the club.

"Their support during the event was excellent, as was the effort made by all of the boxers."

Ernie Oakley's long reach, powerful left jab and fast feet saw him overwhelm his opponent, G Sarowe, of North Herts, but his opponent did make him work hard for the win.

James Berryman, in his first competitive bout, gave a good clean fight to his opponent and lost out by a point.

Jamie Flint outclassed his opponent and won an unanimous decision, which also saw him win the Boxer of the Night award.

Reyce Downs, a little man with a big heart, gave his all in his first bout but lost his fight.

Sid Loveridge had a hard fight for his first bout, with both boxers exchanging hard and on target punches.

Loveridge received a menacing left jab to the face giving him a nose bleed but he carried on, losing on points.

The organisers thanked sponsors and supporters including Breckland District Council, Geoff Ellis, Chris Hales, London Tavern, Loggers Gym, Pest Direct, Donna Kissinger Estate Agents, Emerald Tree Services, Morley Car Services and Repairs and Breckland Tyres.
