Bowls: Hoxne lift cup for first time in two decades

Hoxne won the annual Mid Suffolk all day tournament at Great Yarmouth for the first time in 20 years last Thursday.
At lunch time, the Lord Huntingfield Cup looked like going to the holders Dennington or their usual close rivals Laxfield.

But entering into the final series of games, Hoxne, who finished bottom last year, had a narrow lead and they maintained this as they beat Laxfield 48-44 to finish on 240 shots.

Dennington, who also won the Andrews Cup, were second on 234, with Laxfield on 231.

Fressingfield and Bedingfield shared fourth place on 208 with Stradbroke last on 182.

The Baxter Cup was shared by Fressingfield and Laxfield for an equal number of block wins, 11 other than the champions, and the block prize, highest scoring block, whose team were not in the first two went to the Fressingfield quartet of P Hill, R Smith, R Gyford and M Hewat. Their total was 67 shots.

Competition winners: E Feavearyear, B Hopper, M Flounders, M Ransome, R Harrison, T Diggins, A Burridge, B Roberts, M Chittock, J Everson, R Wilkinson, J George.

* Borough of Eye Ladies have reached the final of the Hadleigh Cup competition, where they will face Lowestoft Rail at Hadleigh on Sunday.

In the semi-final at Eye on Friday, the rain held off until the end of the match which finished early as Rookery Ladies, Stowmarket conceded defeat with Eye leading by 36 shots.

Janet Rush, Christine Beamish, Barbara Salter and Jean Frohawk had a close battle against a strong Stowmarket four but emerged with a 22-18 win.

Mary Saunders, Wyn Hoskins, Beryl Dyer and Sharon Kitchener were always in command, winning 28-10 while Helen Lee, Diane Stannard, Jean Parish and Sally Butcher worked hard to gain a 23-9 victory.

Mary Saunders and Sally Butcher won the Area D EBF Ladies Finals two wood pairs at the Rookery, beating P Jennings and A Lilley (Ixworth) 18-16.

In the Suffolk County EBF finals at St Edmundsbury, the pair won the semi-finals on Saturday but lost the final on Sunday, missing out on the chance to qualify for the national championships at Skegness.

Janet Rush and Alf Chambers bowed out of the Suffolk County (BE) Bowling Association mixed pairs competition on Sunday at Marlborough, losing to B King and P Crisp of Great Cornard in the semi-finals.

Tomorrow, the Borough of Eye men are aiming to reach the final of the Bert Edwards competition when they take on Halesworth in the semi-final at California, Ipswich.

* Diss and District Bowls Club are hosting two Norfolk EBA County U30s matches over the next two weeks.

This Sunday, Norfolk play Cambridgeshire and the following Sunday, July 27, they play Bedfordshire, with both games starting at 10.30am and supporters welcome .

The Diss club also plays host to a Norfolk EBA County friendly game against Cambridgeshire on Tuesday July 29, starting at 2pm.

On Sunday, August 31, Diss and District are holding a Charity Open Pairs Tournament in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness (Cancer Research UK). Pairs may be made of ladies, men or mixed. All bowlers are welcome.
