Athletics: Diss trio play crucial role in second-place finish

Southern Men's League, Division Four North: Diss/West Suffolk travelled to Watford on Saturday with a weakened team due to the English schools championships at Gateshead.
This left the team with just three youths from Diss and three field competitors from West Suffolk.

The Queens Park team had at least three times the number of athletes , so Watford were the ones to beat to for second place and maintain their second positon in the league.

The three Diss youths scored 49 valuable points. Gordon Coe scored 17 points; in first A pole vault, first A high jump and achieved a personal best in the shot putt of 10.30m.

Max Burrows scored 15 points; second A long jump 4.90m, second 100m 12.2s and second 200m 25.2s.

Ryan Knight scored 12 points; fourth 100m, 12.9s; third A 400m, second 200m, 27.2s.

The trio, with one West Suffolk athlete, came second in the 4x100m relay earning five points and helping the team to finish in the all-important second spot.

Diss/West Suffolk's last match is at 'home' at Ipswich on Saturday, August 2.

Result: 1 Queens Park Harriers 46 pts; 2 Diss & West Suffolk 125; 3 Watford 107; 4 Belgrave 103; 5 Serpentine 51; 6 London AC, 8.
