A manhole shattering without warning in Long Stratton caused the closure of the A140 and power cuts to homes
Police and fire services were called to the scene at about 3.45 and it later was discovered to be caused by a fire in the electricity cabling.
The incident was close to the Stratton Motors dealership area of the village.
UK Power Networks, which manages the electricity network, were called to the scene at 5pm and 94 homes in the area had their power turned off to allow workmen to fix the problem.
At 8.45pm tonight (Tuesday) UK Power Networks were still at the scene, but had restored power to the homes.
A statement from UK Power Networks added: “Power supplies have been restored to the area and traffic management is being established to allow the partial re-opening of the A140. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
National Grid were on the scene after a call at about 4pm, but a spokesman said the incident did not relate to the gas main.
It is not known how long the works will take.
The incident caused long delays for motorists.
