TV update for village commune
The whereabouts of a musical group who lived on a commune in Wortham have been revealed in a BBC4 documentary.
What Happened Next?, looked at members of The Global Village Trucking Company – from their lives at the commune in the 1970s to their slightly more conservative present day surroundings.
Diss Express cartoonist Mike Webb recalled how he was asked to design some artwork for the group, after seeing his work in the paper.
"I think people in the area were quite intrigued by them," he said.
"There are stories about the milkman going round to the house and being confronted by naked women."
Mick Madgett, who owns Madgett Cycles in Diss, said watching the documentary brought back fond memories of the time he spent with the group.
"We had some great times there," he said.
"I used to go out on the bus with them to gigs. I got free admission in exchange for helping them out."
Mr Madgett added that one of the most memorable occassions was the wedding of band member James Lascelles and his fiancee Freddy Duhressen at Wortham Church.
"James was 20th in line to the throne so one of the Queen's equities had to be there and there were quite a few society people," he said.
"I know my parents were not too happy about me hanging around at the commune and they couldn't believe it when I said one of them was a member of the Royal Family."
The group split up in 1975 but performed a number of reunion gigs about five years ago.
Driver George Stedman is now a trucker, while lead singer Jon Owen makes musical documentaries.
