Thaxton boosts week of cycling

Norfolk boxing star Jon Thaxton will be at Diss High School on Sunday as the town gears up for National Bike Week.

Starting tomorrow, Diss Bike Week will feature activities across the town and surrounding countryside to promote cycling, including time trials, bicycle coding, and charity bike rides.

Mr Thaxton is appearing as a sports ambassador when the school hosts the annual Tour de Diss 13-mile cycle ride in aid of Cancer Research UK at 11am.

He will also be joining cyclists on the ride into the countryside.

Diss High School business manager Jacqui Lincoln said: “This is the first year the Tour de Diss has started from the high school.

“More than 60 people have signed up to take part in it, so I am thrilled to bits about that.” The school will also be hosting fun for all the family until 4pm, with music from The Diss High School Soul Band, a barbecue and smoothies made by a bicycle.

Young visitors can also enjoy a mini scootathlon, bouncy castles, bungee trampolines and a beat the goalie competition.

“The event to celebrate the school’s travel plan, which encourages the use of sustainable travel and healthy lifestyles,” said Mrs Lincoln.

“It was the pupils who chose Cancer Research UK as the charity and we are hoping to raise a minimum of 250.”

Diss Bike Week will also feature Diss Cycle Club’s time trials, meeting at Billingford layby on Tuesday, 6.30pm, for experienced enthusiasts aged over 16 and Sunday runs for experienced cyclists on June 14 and 21.

Transition Diss – a group of local people looking at ways the community can address issues of climate change and the credit crunch – hopes the events will build awareness of and confidence in using biking as an alternative to car use.
