A telecoms provider in north Suffolk earned the seal of approval from a former member of BBC’s Dragon’s Den this month, less than a year after starting the business.

Vanguard Communications, an independent company in Rectory Hill, Rickinghall, and member of the Diss Business Forum, joined an exclusive collection of winners for the #SBSevent2016 at the ICC in Birmingham, established by well-known entrepreneur Theo Paphitis.

One of five winners from Suffolk, Vanguard was picked out personally by Mr Paphitis in June 2015 as part of Small Business Sunday, a weekly Twitter initiative where the ex-Dragon highlights companies across the UK who promote themselves in a single Tweet with the hashtag #SBS.

Co-founder Elaine Bowen, who set up Vanguard last May with her husband Nigel, said: “It’s important to let other small businesses in Suffolk and East Anglia know these opportunities are out there.

“It really is like an avalanche, particularly when you neglect to turnoff your email notifications. It still feels unreal that we were chosen after only our second Tweet, as some people try for years.”

After being chosen, they were then given access to Mr Paphitis’ #SBS website to create a business profile which, according to Mrs Bowen, provided them with ‘some great business insights’.

Mr and Mrs Bowen, who have 65 years’ combined experience working with large corporate communication firms, later received their award on Friday, February 12, along with a select few hundred businesses from all over the country.

She added: “When Theo came on stage, he was like a breath of fresh air.

“He was very down to earth, bright and funny and his comments made us laugh out loud on several occasions.”
