MPs and councillors from across East Anglia’s political divide have spoken of their horror at yesterday’s terrorist attack in Westminster.

Four people were killed, including one police officer, and dozens injured when a suspected terrorist drove through pedestrians before launching a knife attack.

South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss said: “My thoughts are very much with the family and friends of all those affected by today’s incident in Westminster.

“Praise must be given to the emergency services for their swift response and for the incredible bravery shown by police officers.”

Swaffham Conservative councillor Ian Sherwood was in the Palace of Westminster when the attack happened.

He tweeted that he had been among a group in a room in nearby Portcullis House, which was split up and moved to another location.

In a later post, he wrote: “This is terrible and to be locked in @HouseofCommons at the moment is surreal, Police & Staff keeping us safe.”

Mid-Norfolk MP George Freeman said he had heard gunshots before he was “rushed away” by police.

He later praised the “incredibly brave” anti-terrorist officers who were involved in the lockdown operation.

North Norfolk’s Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb also took to social media to say his office team were safe following the attack.

A short time ago, Labour MEP Alex Mayer said: “The unfolding events in London are heart breaking. Only this morning we commemorated the one year anniversary of the Brussels bombings.

“My thoughts are with everyone affected and the emergency services that we all rely on at times like this.

“We need to stay united. Terrorists will never destroy our way of life and democracy must always win.”
