Readers respond to Chernobyl's Children charity appeal
Following an appeal in the Diss Express last month, things are looking up for the town's branch of Friends of Chernobyl's Children (FOCC).
The group needed to raise 6,000 by May to ensure a group of children from Belarus affected by the aftermath of the 1986 nuclear disaster made it over to Diss in July for their annual health-boosting visit.
But chairman David Hannant said there had been a good response to the article and that enough money had been raised to pay for the children's flights.
"Money is coming in and it is looking good at the moment," said Mr Hannant.
"We have got the flights booked but more help is needed."
The charity also needs to find a host family for one of the children, 11-year-old Misha Zhernosek.
Misha has been coming to Diss for the last four years, and 2010 was set to be his fifth and final visit.
But a change in the personal circumstances of his previous host family means his chance to return now hangs in the balance.
Mr Hannant said the charity was looking for an individual, couple or family who were willing to take Misha into their home for a month from July 16.
"The children all attend daily activities and trips for around five days a week between the hours of nine and four which means most host families can still work," he said.
FOCC also needs to find host families for two adult interpreters and would like to hear from local families and businesses willing to organise a trip for the children, sponsor a child for five years, organise a fundraising event or make a donation.
