One thousand miles. Three days. Two countries. And one gracefully-aging £400 banger car.

According to one south Norfolk driving enthusiast, his realisation that life meant more than just making money was the inspiration behind setting off on the Barcelona Banger Run next month, in aid of two charities close to their heart.

John Fryer, 44, of Julians Way in Pulham Market, and his wife Donna will embark on a self-financed voyage from Calais to Barcelona along with 79 other banger teams on Friday, May 22, with the hope of raising at least £1,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care and Sane UK.

Mr Fryer, who runs local heavy goods vehicle firm Pesra Solutions Ltd, told the Diss Express: “Most of the time, everyone is so busy chasing money, myself included.

“I am a self-employed HGV driver and I go where the business is. But I have come to realise there is more to life than earning a living.”

Last year, Mr Fryer took part in the Czecheap Challenge, a similar banger run which travelled from Belgium to the Czech Republic via Germany and Austria, and collected just under £1,000 towards the event’s total fundraising of around £40,000.

“Me and my brother-in-law have a passion for driving, so we thought it would be a bit of fun and a chance to help some good causes,” Mr Fryer said.

“It would be nice to be able to raise at least that much again. Apparently, one in two of us will have our lives affected by cancer, and as for Sane UK, it’s amazing how many people are affected by mental illness, but it’s the sort of thing that often gets swept under the rug.”

He added he plans to sell the banger, a red and silver Volvo, once they return from the run, with the intention of dividing the money from the sale among the charities.

At the time of going to print, the team has brought in almost £150 of its target.
