Parents' plea in memory of son
As Jackie and Ray Talbot prepare to mark the first anniversary of their son's death, they are calling on people to show a sense of community spirit.
On Sunday, it will be a year since Mrs Talbot found her eldest son Michael, 26, lying dead in his bedroom at the family home in Diss following a suspected heroin overdose.
The memories live on and the pain is still raw but Mr and Mrs Talbot have channelled their grief into positive action by trying to raise money to set up a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre in the town.
But amost six weeks after appealing to the public for their support through the Diss Express, regional newspapers and radio stations, the couple have received just 100 - less than 0.1 per cent of their 150,000 target.
"They say charity begins at home and this is home. This is to help local people," she said
"It's the future of the children in this area we are talking about."
Mr and Mrs Talbot have begun organising fundraising activities, including a kickboxing night in Diss run by boxer Michael's former club in Harleston.
One local woman, whose son is recovering from alcoholism, offered her support to the Talbots.
Wanting to remain anonymous to protect her son, she told the Diss Express there was no help locally for drug addicts and alcoholics.
"Anyone with a drink or drug problem who says 'I need help' needs that help immediately," she said.
"There needs to be something for them locally.
"I know local people wouldn't like it. They turn their backs on the problem unless it's touched them personally.
"They think all drug addicts are wasters and all alcoholics are old men but they're not. You can't turn your back on people in need."
Mr and Mrs Talbot need 5,000 to turn the Michael James Talbot Memorial Trust into a registered charity.
They are asking for people to give generously or help by organising fundraising events.
"I think that as a community we have a duty of care," said Mrs Talbot.
"Everyone knows that but still nothing is done."
