Time for Tesco to get eye checks
Emma Withers in last week's Diss Express thinks she was humiliated.
On Sunday, I was not allowed to buy a small bottle of cider (for cooking purposes) because I was told I may be giving it to my daughter who was with me.
My daughter is a respectable married mother of two and aged 32, I am 56. I think this must beat Emma's case.
I was visiting my daughter and family for the day near Diss and we decided to pop to Tesco for items for dinner.
My daughter had in her trolley fresh vegetables and fruit and one small bottle of cider.
When she got to the checkout she was asked for ID to prove she was over 25!
As we had just popped out she had no ID on her , so I said I would buy it. The young girl on the checkout refused saying I may give it to my daughter.
We were furious, I went to another checkout and was told again I could not purchase it as I may give it to my daughter.
Has Tesco gone mad? She was a 32-year-old adult wanting to purchase just one bottle of cider to cook with.
It seems strange that at 16 you can sell alcohol in a supermarket, at 18 you can purchase alcohol and drink it in a bar, and vote for your country, but a respectable woman of 32 (who wishes she really did look under 25!) couldn't buy it to cook with.
Maybe Tesco should get all staff to have eye tests to actually be able to decide on customer ages more accurately.
I will not only boycott the Tesco store in Diss, but Tesco altogether, including other services provided by them.
Fortunately I live in a large town and have the choice of seven supermarkets. Tesco will no longer be in my choice.

It is the only thing about Tesco that I do agree with!
There are too many irresponsible parents and as is always the case, the responsible ones are tarred with the same brush.
As an old fuddy-duddy, I was brought up not to eat, smoke, or drink outside. I did all three but always at home or in a restaurant and later, in pubs.
Sad, really, to think that life is so awful for many youngsters these days that they either have to get drunk or take drugs!

If they make a mistake and sell to someone under-age or someone supplying to people under-age, it is the shop assistant who gets a fine, criminal record or prison sentence.
The ones buying the alcohol get told off. Is this fair? No!

Pun-ish these headline writers
For a long time I have gritted my teeth when I have read some of the headline puns in the Diss Express.
We all need humour in our reading, together with originality and some literary ability to make for enjoyment.
Indeed, we only have to think of one of the more famous puns in history, when General Sir Charles Napier having conquered the province of Sind, sent a message saying one Latin word Peccavi (I have sinned), to realise the opportunities for ‘good’ punning.
Last week we had no less than three unoriginal ones on page 12 (I shan’t make the same mistake by repeating them) and a dreadful one a few pages later – ‘German journey was actually ‘ferry’ nice experience’!
By all means let us have humorous reporting but if you have to pun, please can we have fewer and better ones.

Choir on song
Just a note to express our thanks and delight to the Waveney Choir.
They performed at Redgrave Church on May 9, singing songs from Oliver, Les Miserables, Abba, Karl Jenkins and Poulenc.
The choir sounded wonderful and so jolly when they sang songs from the musicals.
They are such a friendly bunch. They need to do more of this jolly music. It is wonderful. They swayed to the music and we loved every minute of their performance.

A good result
With reference to last week’s Diss Express report about Laxfield Parish Council turning down plans to divide our excellent village shop into smaller units (Opposition mounts to shops plan).
Owner Mrs Shuttle is quoted as saying that the parish council made the decision on the limited information available.
This is not true.
I was at that meeting as a member of the public and all the members of the parish council had copies of the plans and were given plenty of time to study them.
They were told by the chairman to vote on the plans only, which they did, and unanimously turned them down – a very good result in my opinion.
