Flats put town on road to ruin

Should the proposed demolition of Grasmere and its replacement by 14 flats be approved by South Norfolk Council, I believe the effect on traffic flow in Diss would be catastrophic.

The present building is within inches of the pavement and in order to accommodate contractors, their vehicles and plant, an alternative pavement would need to be provided for up to 18 months.

A county council survey last year, recorded more than 8,000 vehicles a day using Denmark Street, hundreds of them being HGVs, during peak periods.

A one-way traffic flow would result in tail backs past the Park Road roundabout to the south and the Crown Inn crossroads to the north, blocking access to Diss from nearly all directions and severely delaying through traffic.

On April 15, a survey of Diss town centre showed that of just under 100 retail units, 20 were vacant.

Should this development be allowed, one can only guess at how many more shops and businesses would close as a result of the frustrations and delays caused to their clients.

In order to protect Diss as a market town and regional centre, I would urge shop keepers and businessmen who believe they would be adversely affected, to forward their concerns to South Norfolk Council.

At present the view over the Mere is lovely. A block of unsightly flats will ruin it. Leave Grasmere alone.

On behalf of the Friends of Chernobyl's Children (Diss and District) I thank everyone at Grasmere for their continued support of our charity.

Our latest fundraiser was a bangers and bingo night and made 143.

Fundraising is never easy, but by being able to use the club it has really helped us, we have used the facilities for many events and it will make our fundraising even more difficult if we were to lose this wonderful venue.

Horses worse than dogs

I would like to speak up for the rights of dog owners. Most dog walkers are responsible and do clear up after their dogs.

When the horses in Rose Lane are moved, the whole pavement through to Mission Road is covered in muck.

They are moved at least once a week and make more of a mess than any dog and it is in the middle of pavement, so hard for prams to avoid without going on busy road.

I suggest the town council look at that and leave the dog walkers alone.

Thank you all

We take this opportunity to thank the managers, staff and customers of Mere Moments cafe and Morrisons supermarket for supporting promotional activities during Slimming World's Obesity, Let's Beat It Together campaign.

As a result, Slimming World groups in town have benefited from more than 50 new members.

The 'Free Food' hamper raffled in Morrisons raised 37.50 for their chosen charities, Help the Aged and ChildLine.

The new menu at Mere Moments is helping customers make healthier choices and we express thanks to Helen and Sharon.

Karen Gaul, Lucy Shepard and Julie Steadman, Diss Slimming World

As a result of a collection made at Budgens Store, Harleston, on April 3 and 4, 1,088.89 was raised for Macmilllan Cancer Support.

We are most grateful for the generosity of everyone.

Thank you.

Rosemary Mason, treasurer, Macmillan Cancer Support, Waveney Valley Group, Bungay

n On behalf of East Anglia's Children's Hospices, Diss Friends' Group express their thanks to Morrison's supermarket and their staff for allowing a bucket collection in the Diss store on April 17 and 18.

Shoppers' donations totalled 435.14 which will go a long way towards helping the charity continue its essential work.

Super service

In the last few weeks I have visited the doctor, dentist, optician, and visited a friend in Weavers Court, who needs help after suffering a stroke.

All these places are within walking distance and very essential.

Ambulance or fire appliances are on call. We are lucky to have all these good services as and when needed.

All the people concerned are kind and helpful. The ladies in Weavers Court are so patient with my friend who is blind.

Good care is an essential part of our lives. Diss is good.
