Around 250 people filled St Michael’s Church in Framlingham on August 27, to say farewell to a local popular and well-respected citizen and businessman, Gordon Bullingham. He was 73 years old.

Born in Stradbroke, where he attended the local school, his father Ernie was a butcher.

The first part of Gordon’s life was involved with bread. He worked initially for bakers W.A. French’s of Stradbroke. He then helped a friend run a bakery at Boxford, near Sudbury. Finally, he worked for Matthies of Ipswich.

Gordon married local girl Jacqueline Gooch in 1964 and they had one son, Andrew. Jacqueline tragically died at the age of 38.

In 1971, Gordon met another Framlingham lady, Mavis Smith. They jointly ran a fish and chip shop in the town. They also had a son, Darrell.

Gordon’s two great hobbies were football and motor bikes. An avid Ipswich Town fan, he also supported local football and sports generally, and also played for Stradbroke Football Club. He was chairman of Framlingham Town Football Club from 1976 to 1983 and a committee member of the Framlingham Sports Club for 43 years. In addition he was in charge of advertising for the annual Framlingham gala for a considerable length of time.

In a tribute to his father, Andrew Bullingham said his dad showed great courage and stoicism in the face of continued ill health over the last decade of his life. Gordon passed away on August 11, 2015. The service, conducted by the Rev David Pitcher, began with the singing of ‘Amazing Grace’ by Charity Quin. Darrel Bullingham and his partner Kirsty Scriven read ‘God’s Garden’ and a poem was read by David Hammond.

Committal took place in the cemetery, after which refreshments were served at Framlingham Sports Club.
