Youngsters at Mendham Primary School staged a rocket launch of their own last week to coincide with the day the European Space Agency landed an unmanned craft on an asteroid.

The pupils of Sycamore Class received a special science lesson on the inner workings and mechanics of the craft, before launching a model rocket to a height of around 600 metres and later recovering it a mile from the launch site.

Executive headteacher Andrew Aalders-Dunthorne said: “This was a really exciting opportunity for the children and was a current event for the pupils to engage in.

“We are passionate about giving pupils the very best experiences in practical science.”
